Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take me to become fluent?
It depends on how much time you can devote to it. I recommend you study at least 15 minutes a day, more if you can. The ideal situation is, of course, total immersion in France but if that’s not possible, you need to recreate those conditions at home – watch French films, listen to French podcasts, watch French You Tube videos, read French books, etc.
Do I need to do anything between lessons?
Yes. If you only rely on your 1 hour a week, you will get nowhere. I recommend you go over everything we do again and again, even if it’s just 10 minutes here and there. Be prepared to memorise it, too.
Will you give me homework?
If you like, but if you follow the above recommendations, you shouldn’t need extra homework. As every lesson builds on to the previous one, you will need to know each one well before you can make any worthwhile progress.
I have this app/book/audio method I like, can I still use it?
Absolutely. The more you do, the better. It’s always a good idea to vary your sources of French information, so you can get used to different voices, styles and accents.
Are there any tricks to learn quicker?
I find it very effective to revise just before bed. Sleep helps consolidate what you have just learnt. Plus, the 15-minutes a day works really well for me (that’s how I am learning Spanish).
What is your teaching method like?
It is based on learning the top 20% of the language you will use 80% of the time. I will get you used to speaking from day 1. Each lesson is structured around speaking, listening and reading (writing only for those who need it, for instance business French students) and you will learn at your own pace.
What if I (or my child) have learning difficulties or special needs?
It’s not a problem – I can accommodate your specific circumstances, as long as you (or they) have the drive to learn!
How old do children have to be before they can start lessons?
Ideally around 4 – as long as they are happy to interact with someone other than their parents. Before that, you can do a lot towards their learning by just putting on French music or TV in the background, for instance. You can also get them to watch cartoons such as Popi or Petit Ours Brun on YouTube.
What do other people have to say about your lessons?
You can have a look at the Feedback section on the home page of this website.
Can I see you and have a chat before committing?
Of course. You can come and see me if you are local, or we can chat over the phone if it’s more convenient.
